A Reminder to All Skaters:

fuckyeahrollerderbyzebra:

When a referee makes a call.

We ARE NOT:

  • Commenting on how well/poorly you skate.
  • Judging intent on your actions.
  • Saying you do things wrong.
  • Saying you are wrong.
  • Saying you’re a bad person.
  • Wishing harm on you or your family.
  • Commenting on how well/poorly you executed whatever action.

However, we ARE:

  • Commenting on an observation of broken rules.

Please remember! We love you all. This is a sport that we got into as refs/NSOs/etc because we love the sport and want to see you all succeed! We are just enforcing the ruleset that is given to us to the best of our abilities.

Sometimes we do not see things. Sometimes we are not up on the latest rule clarification or nuance of the rules. Or things slip our mind as we’re watching 10 of the awesome-est athletes duke it out at a time. But we try. Oh, how we try.

Just, you know, keep that in mind.

A friendly reminder from your FYRDZ.

anyone keeping up with world champs?

just heard the usa-nz score - 377 to 8, holy crap! i actually feel bad about that…

derby is kind of central to the usa, which i think is why that happened. now now - before any international followers get mad, i do appreciate you guys, and i’d love to see more overseas derby! but the us is where wftda operates out of, it’s where the sport was reborn, it’s where we have enough teams in enough regions to have regionals, nationals, etc. i was expecting usa to be at a bit of an advantage. not that much, though!

kiwis, don’t give up! hopefully this worlds mentality will help everyone see that we need to be closer as a derby community, and maybe it’ll foster some more international travel? what do you all think?

I’m interested to know what other skaters think about the continuation of derby names in our sport.

Submitted By: dears

Strange. I don’t agree with this at all.
From a fans perspective, I think derby names make this sport more interesting and unique. And I’ve never thought any of these skaters are less of an athlete because of their persona. In my opinion, It’s just another little thing that makes derby different and much great than any other sport. I don’t want to see roller derby become something it’s not. -Sammy Slam

What does everyone else think?

i personally love derby names.

when i was at western regionals this year, i had the pleasure of watching the denver roller dolls skate - they’re one of the few teams that skates solely under their true names. it was…an experience.

my arguments may not be the most “important” ones, but i feel them. i like derby names because: they’re more fun to cheer, they provide a sense of anonymity, and they allow a derby persona.

firstly, the cheering thing. i am a huge cheerer - when i go to a bout, i’m loud. i remember cheering for heather juska from drd, and it just wasn’t as much fun as screaming “GEEEEET SOOOOOME” for carmen getsome of my own rat city rollergirls.

secondly, and this may be a lame reason, there’s a sense of mystery behind derby name. whether you don’t want your coworkers to know you play (strange, but maybe you don’t - to each their own), you don’t want creeps at the after party knowing your real name, there might be a good reason behind wanting the anonymity. but furthermore, it creates a sense of community. i love being at the rat’s nest (rat city’s practice space) and saying hi to all the skaters and knowing their derby names, but not having a clue if they’re a michelle or an andrea or a tiffany. to have a community of friends that is dependent firstly upon this great sport that we share is something really special, and i think derby names only add to that.

lastly, derby names enforce the feeling of having a “derby persona”. if you’re not familiar with the concept of a derby persona, it’s a sort of character you take on when you’re on the track that may be completely different from who you are off skates. for instance, you can be the meanest, scrappiest skater when you’re bouting, yet the sweetest, meekest person off skates. having a derby name helps give another layer of insulation between the two worlds. when you gear up and assume your derby name, you don’t have to worry about what’s happening off the track.

that’s why i like derby names. they’re unique to the sport, and i don’t see anything wrong with them. i know that it’s been argued that they’re “unprofessional”, and if we want the sport to grow and become a real, recognized sport, those will hinder it. i don’t agree, personally. i think they give the sport soul, and i will be happy to see them stick around :)

thoughts??

Isn’t nice when they let zombies play with the regular kids. Zombies do play nicely with others (mostly)
